After marriage
Wen Yang's twenty-six years have been relatively smooth sailing. Her family was harmonious, her parents were loving, her academic performance was above average, and her personality was gentle. She didn't experience much of a rebellious phase in her youth; she successfully got into her dream university and met Cheng Yanyu there. He pampered and doted on her. After graduation, while her classmates were frantically searching for jobs,
she leisurely married Cheng Yanyu and moved with him to the city of Nancheng. She stayed at home, ostensibly to take care of his life, but in reality, they were both looking after each other in their simple life together.
Their life as a couple was quite refined.
Classmates who knew them envied Wen Yang's lifestyle, as she had already settled into a laid-back routine. Cheng Yanyu started an event planning company right after graduating from college. Although it was a startup, he was quite capable and quickly made it successful, even paying off the mortgage on their marital home in Nancheng.
In the two years since their marriage, Wen Yang hadn't learned much else, but her cooking skills had improved significantly, especially since she loved to eat.
However, today her luck took a turn for the worse. While cutting an onion, she accidentally nicked her pinky finger.
The pain brought tears to Wen Yang's eyes as she covered her pinky finger and searched everywhere for the first aid kit. She pulled it out from beside the sofa cabinet, but just as she opened it, a loud clap of thunder crashed outside, making Wen Yang scream in fright. She had always been terrified of thunder.
The rumbling continued, one clap after another. Pinching her pinky finger, Wen Yang became a bit fussy. She reached for her phone and called Cheng Yanyu.
Beep, beep, beep—
Amid the raging storm outside, the phone kept ringing with no answer. Wen Yang's brow furrowed in annoyance. On her second attempt, it rang for three seconds before finally being picked up.
Without waiting for Cheng Yanyu to speak, Wen Yang said, "Why did it take you so long to answer?"
A familiar, gentle voice came through, "Honey, I'm sorry. I was busy just now. Did the thunder scare you?"
"What do you think?"
"I know. I closed the windows for you before leaving this morning. You opened the curtains, didn't you?"
"Yes."
Wen Yang replied confidently, knowing he could predict her behavior. But there was one thing he couldn't foresee—the wound on her pinky finger. She quickly added, "I cut my pinky while chopping vegetables. It's bleeding a lot."
Cheng Yanyu was startled and immediately asked, "Have you stopped the bleeding? The first aid kit is under the sofa. Take it out, and remember to disinfect it first before applying a bandage. How big is the wound?"
Hearing his anxious tone, Wen Yang's eyes sparkled with amusement. Leaning on the armrest of the sofa, she replied, "It's pretty big. I'll just slap on a bandage. Make sure to come home early tonight to help me take care of it."
She was urging him to come home early that night.
Cheng Yanyu understood and agreed.
Having achieved her goal, Wen Yang hung up the phone. She hurriedly applied a bandage to the wound. Fortunately, it wasn't very large; it was just bleeding a bit, which looked somewhat scary. Afterward, the stinging pain from the torn skin made her casually tidy up the kitchen and decide not to cook.
She ordered takeout with a casual flick of her little finger.
Outside, the heavy rain continued. After dinner, Wen Yang took a shower and settled on the sofa to watch TV while waiting for Cheng Yanyu.
The clock on the wall ticked away second by second. Thunder and lightning rumbled occasionally outside. Wen Yang didn't dare to go back to her room to sleep alone. The TV in the living room was on, and the moving figures on the screen made the atmosphere feel a bit livelier.
However, tonight Cheng Yanyu didn't come home as he usually did.
Generally, he would return home on time, never even early.
Wen Yang, hugging a cushion, picked up her phone to check the time several times. He had rarely been this unpunctual before. She put down her phone, deciding to wait a little longer, and if he still didn’t return, she would call him.
After an unknown amount of time, the sound of the fingerprint lock opening the door was heard.
By now, Wen Yang had fallen asleep on the sofa while waiting. The room was bright. Cheng Yanyu, with one shoulder damp, changed his shoes and entered the house, turning to see the woman sleeping face down on the sofa.
He paused, noticing Wen Yang’s hand hanging by her side with a hastily applied bandage. Cheng Yanyu suddenly came to his senses, walked over, crouched down, and gently took out the first-aid kit from under the sofa.
The hemostatic and disinfectant supplies inside were quite messy from her use. Cheng Yanyu took out the disinfectant, held her fingertip, and carefully peeled off the bandage from her little finger.
But Wen Yang still woke up. She hadn’t been sleeping deeply to begin with. As soon as her eyes opened, she saw Cheng Yanyu. Her voice thick with sleepiness, she gently scolded him, “Why are you back so late?”
Her eyes had always been gentle and soft, now glistening with sleep.
Cheng Yanyu met her gaze for only a second before lowering his head to tend to the wound. His tone was very low, “I took on a last-minute project and had a meeting.”
"Got another project? What's it about this time?" Cheng Yanyu would tell Wen Yang about the projects his company was working on, and sometimes Wen Yang would offer him some small creative ideas. Cheng Yanyu paused for a moment before saying, "A jewelry exhibition."
"Wow," Wen Yang exclaimed softly, then added, "You should have told me about that."
Cheng Yanyu gently applied a bandage to her fingertip, his voice soft, "Mm, I'll definitely let you know next time."
He felt a sense of guilt.
He knew that with the heavy rain and thunder, she would be scared alone.
After applying the bandage, Cheng Yanyu stood up, bent down to pick up Wen Yang, and carried her toward the master bedroom. He looked down at her and said, "In the future, if you're really tired, just go back to your room to sleep. The way you were sleeping, you might roll off the bed."
After hearing his explanation and promise, Wen Yang didn't blame him for being late tonight. With one hand around his neck, she said softly, "Well, I’m afraid of thunder, so I wasn't asleep anyway."
Cheng Yanyu understood she had waited too long before falling asleep. He nodded slightly and said nothing.
Wen Yang smiled but then noticed his wet shoulder. She reached out to touch it and asked, "Did you get caught in the rain?"
In that moment, the muscles beneath his clothes tensed slightly. Cheng Yanyu's voice dropped even lower. He didn’t look at her as he entered the room and turned on the light. He let out a soft "Ah," nodded, and said, "I was seeing a client off to their car and got caught in the rain."
He laid Wen Yang on the bed and pulled the blanket over her. "You sleep first. I'll take a shower."
Wen Yang touched his shoulder. "Go quickly; don’t catch a cold. Should I make you some ginger tea?"
